When 19-year-old Miley Cyrus announced her engagement to Liam Hemsworth in May, there were more comments about her marrying at such a young age than there were actual congratulations. But the former Disney star isn’t listening to her critics. “Life is too short not to be with the person you want to be with,” she says in the September issue of Marie Claire. “I don’t really care about the wedding or the piece of paper as much as I do the promise we’ve made to each other. And we want to have a long engagement.”

It took breaking up “once or twice” for Cyrus to realize that the “Hunger Games” hunk was the real deal. She says she initially thought she was too “young and immature” to be in such a committed relationship with Hemsworth, who is three years older. But, she adds, “At some point you realize these people you’re hanging out with are your ‘party friends’; they’re not going to give a s–t about you in 10 years. Then you remember who you really want around you.”

After getting back together, Cyrus and Hemsworth began talking engagement and she even looked at some rings online. Still, she says that when he did get down on one knee at the 8,000 square-foot Mediterranean-style home they share outside of Los Angeles (which used to belong to her parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, who now live two doors down), it was a “complete surprise.” And the Australian native did a good job picking out the ring. The 3.5-carat Neil Lane diamond set in a yellow-gold band with filigree detailing is similar to one she says she saw online and liked. “I just love that it’s old and has a story,” Cyrus gushes. “And I’m happy because it doesn’t look like anything else I wear.”

Miley Cyrus bounds into her spacious backyard in California’s palm-tree-studded San Fernando Valley wearing a figure-flaunting half-shirt, Daisy Duke cutoffs, and studded platform sneakers, a look so redneck-skimpy that by nightfall, the bloggers will have crucified her for it. Not that she cares. Cyrus has never been in better shape, both physically and emotionally, a 19-year-old firecracker with washboard abs, a smoky laugh, and a filthy mouth who these days bears about as much resemblance to her former Disney-star self as a Mojito resembles a lemonade. Nipping at Cyrus’ heels is a tumbling pack of four rescue dogs, while a fifth, a bulldog named Ziggy, rests inside. Earlier, Ziggy ate two Jacquie Aiche bracelets right off her wrist. “She’s a stubborn little bitch, that one,” Cyrus says, her voice tangy and redolent of her native Nashville. “She doesn’t listen to me. She’s in love with Liam. She loves me when he’s gone, but she totally ate my diamonds on purpose. She was pooping them out all morning!”

The Liam she refers to is Cyrus’ newly minted fiancé, Australian import Liam Hemsworth, the strapping 22-year-old star of The Hunger Games and her boyfriend for the past three years. The pair live together in the 8,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style villa Cyrus’ family once lived in. She moved back in last year when her parents relocated two doors down. Cyrus’ mother, Tish, did most of the decorating, which tends toward oversize Eastern-influenced pieces; sturdy tables made of reclaimed wood; a giant, modern sofa that Cyrus and Hemsworth “sleep on all the time”; and spiritual touches like a stone Buddha and painted-wooden crosses that Cyrus has collected in her travels. Here, sur-rounded by towering trees and safely ensconced inside her palatial residence, Cyrus enjoys utter privacy. “It’s kind of like a black hole. And no one is going to fuck with me when P. Diddy lives right across the street,” she laughs.

With so many celeb breakups in the news, the “Hannah Montana” star adds, “Neither of us is super-jealous. We know each other and would never do anything to hurt each other.”

The 19-year-old surprised her fans when she announced that she was engaged to 'The Hunger Games' actor in May, and some critics have suggested that she's far too young to get hitched.

But now the teen has hit back at the critics and claimed that "life's too short" to do what other people want you to do.

Miley believes that Liam is the right guy for her, and she's not turning into a bridezilla just yet, as she's not too fussed about the actual ceremony.

In the September issue of the US Marie Claire magazine, Miley said: "Life is too short not to be with the person you want to be with. I don't really care about the wedding or the piece of paper as much as I do the promise we've made to each other. And we want to have a long engagement."

Although rumours about the couple getting engaged had been sparked months before they revealed their engagement, Miley has insisted that when Liam proposed earlier this year, it had been a "complete surprise".

Explaining how she loved Liam's choice for her vintage diamond ring, Miley said: "I just love that it's old and has a story... and I'm happy because it doesn't look like anything else I wear."

In a recent interview with Men's Health, Liam gushed about his bride-to-be. The 22-year-old said: "She's an extremely strong, intelligient, supportive person."

Sounds like the pair have reached the honeymoon stage, without the wedding!

Nina Dobrev has a message for Miley Cyrus and fans of the young singer: My bad!

In an interview with Canadian magazine Fashion, The Vampire Diaries star was asked about her relationship with Ian Somerhalder and if there were any plans to walk down any aisles in the near future.

“Eventually I am going to marry and have a family but not anytime soon,” the 23-year old said. “I’m not going to pull a Miley.”

But Dobrev quickly realized she unintentionally mocked Miley’s engagement to Liam Hemsworth and took to Twitter to offer a clarification/apology.

“Note to self, light hearted comments don’t always translate in magazine articles. Big fan of @Mileycyrus – do you need a flower girl? :)”

That’s pretty cute. We’d have to imagine all is forgiven now.

While Australian actor and ‘Hunger Games’ star Liam Hemsworth got his start on soap operas, he probably never expected he’d be part of one himself.

But as the new fiance of Miley Cyrus — whose very public growing pains have resulted in battles with both her family and the press — he might want to get used to the drama that follows one of the world’s biggest stars.

The pair met and began dating while co-starring in the 2009 film ‘The Last Song,’ and while it wasn’t always smooth sailing, he popped the question with a 3.5-carat diamond ring earlier this summer.

“She’s an extremely strong, intelligent, supportive person,” Hemsworth told Men’s Health about his superstar girlfriend.

Miley is probably glad for some of that strength right about now — on Wednesday, a semi-nude photo of her popped up on the web, becoming the latest in a series of sorta-scandals the 19-year-old singer and actress has weathered.

But at least these days, she’s not weathering them alone. In fact, Hemsworth has helped her through a number of small fiascoes, most recently surrounding a penis cake she got him for his birthday. That’s love!
